Chapter Thirteen

Regan stood in the train station looking at people walking by, one hand gripping the travel bag slung over his shoulder. Excitement bubbled through him for the upcoming journey, knowing he was going to be spending time with his best friend as well as the girl he had become enamored with.

He saw Shane before Shane saw him, and the first thing that he noticed was his friend didn’t look happy. Shane had always been the daredevil between the two with a glint of mischief shining in his grey eyes. Now he looked like someone had drowned his favorite puppy while getting kicked in the balls. When Shane looked around Regan waved a hand and his friend hurried over to him.

He gave Shane a quick hug.

“What’s wrong with you?” Regan asked.

“There’s this woman I can’t stop thinking about.”

Regan’s eyes widened. He’d known Shane since they were ten years old, had spent every summer with him including the ones on college break, and damned if he’d ever heard those particular words uttered by Lord Shane Gordon.

“Excuse me?” he asked, just to double check he’d heard right.

“Ah, hell,” Shane muttered. “My voyeur girl. She’s seeing someone else.”

“Oh.” Regan was very confused. “How do you know?”

“We went on a date and it was pretty fucking amazing right up until she told me about the man she was going away with.”

Regan was still confused. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Why are you upset that she’s got another man? Usually this would make you very happy since it meant you didn’t have to deal with a clingy woman after.”

“Because I liked her,” Shane said.

“You like all your women.”

“No, Regan,” Shane said, frustration leaking into his voice. “I mean I really liked her.”

Regan honestly didn’t know what to say to that. He’d never seen a lovesick Shane, hadn’t known what a lovesick Shane would actually look like, and now that he did it boggled his mind.

Shane threw up a hand. “Sorry. Sorry for being a killjoy. I promise not to be a downer our whole trip. You and me, we’re going to tear up the French countryside.”

“About that,” Regan said, running a hand over his neck. “I forgot to tell you I invited someone.”

“Come again?”

“I met this girl and, man, she’s gorgeous. And funny. And … I invited her to join me on this trip.”

Shane let out a long suffering sigh. “Fuck me. Really? You get to have a girl on this trip and I get to toss off with my hand? Not exactly fair.”

“I suppose the timing sucks, huh?”

“Yep.”

“Here she comes,” Regan said, looking over Shane’s head. He raised his hand to wave at her.

“Great. Just fucking great.”

“I didn’t realize when I invited Molly that you were going through something, but please try to be nice to her,” Regan said.

Shane blinked at him. “Wait. What’s her name?”

“Molly. You’re going to like her.”

“Bloody hell!” Shane swore. “I can’t believe this. You’re the other man!”

Regan felt like he’d missed something important. “What?”

And then Shane spun and Regan saw Molly come to a stop as she saw them both standing together.
